DIY Dry Shampoo (for all hair colors!)

Okay, Fam, we have one of our favorite DIYs for you today!

Our dry shampoo recipe(s)!

We try and not over-wash our hair around here (read more about washing hair and repairing damaged hair here), so this dry shampoo comes in handy between washes!

This DIY can get messy! But it’s great to store in a empty SBA clay mask jar. Another reason to keep and reuse your SBA glass bottles.

Let's hear from Chelsea, our founder and CEO, about this DIY:
"I tend to wash my hair every 4ish days or so (give or take one) and this dry shampoo is great for in-between washes. Unfortunately, aerosol dry shampoos are FULL of nasty chemicals you do NOT want on your head or coating your skin all day!"

Okay, now onto the DIY + instructional video!

DIY

For brown hair:

  •  1 tbsp. of Arrowroot Powder (you can use corn starch but I find it is much more white than my arrowroot powder and takes much more cocoa powder to look brown)
  • 2 tbsp. Raw Cocao Powder (I am sure the non-raw stuff will work just fine)
  • 1/4 tsp. of cinnamon (if you have red tones or red hair, you’d obviously add a lot more of cinnamon or pumpkin spice blend and less cacao powder).
  •  Essential oil (I tend to use lavender but you could scent it with any EO - you can drop it on, I just already had some in a spray bottle)
  • Empty spice jar bottle or an empty SBA Mask bottle.

Follow the above loosely for the DIYs below:

For black hair:

  • If you have black hair, you may want to start with my recipe and omit the cinnamon and add activated coconut charcoal instead. Add preferred essential oils.

For blonde/white hair:

  • Arrowroot powder + a little bit of cinnamon or maybe even turmeric (depending on your hair tones). Omit the raw cocoa powder. Add preferred essential oils.

For red hair:

  • Arrowroot powder + pumpkin spice powder + tumeric and possibly a dash of cocoa powder/cinnamon. Adjust ratios until your shade is reached. Add preferred essential oils.

For gray hair:

  • Arrowroot powder + activated coconut charcoal. Adjust until your shade is reached. Add preferred essential oils.

Tips:

  • Try to not get the powder on to your hairline, just on your hair needing some dry shampoo.
  • Apply into your hand first - don’t sprinkle directly onto your head.
  • Start with a small amount and work your way from there.
  • If it doesn’t soak in the oil in your hair - it may just be time to wash it.

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND: My DIYs have not been tested and tried by many like my products have been. I share what works best for me and you have to modify it to meet your hair or skin needs.
